“In Unchalli, near Sirsi, a remarkable effort is underway to conserve traditional paddy diversity. A total of 34 landrace paddy varieties have been established in the Unchalli Paddy Conservation Block. Before sowing, the seeds undergo careful preparation. Based on quantity, paddy seeds are first soaked in salt water to remove unfilled grains that float on the surface. The seeds are then washed with clean water to remove excess salt. Next, the seeds are treated with Trichoderma at 10 grams per kilogram and mixed thoroughly to protect against diseases. The treated seeds are packed in labeled gunny bags and immersed in water, weighed down, and soaked for at least 12 hours. After soaking, the seed bags are removed and kept in a dry place. For the next two days, a hot water treatment process is carried out in the morning and evening to promote uniform germination.
