I spend a lot of time alone in the woods

I spend a lot of time alone in the woods. That’s not something I say for effect… it’s just context. You need to understand that when I tell you what happened in the Monongahela National Forest in September of 2022, I’m not someone who scares easily. I’ve been backpacking and solo camping across West Virginia and Virginia since I was sixteen. I grew up near these forests. By the time I was twenty, I had spent more nights alone in the wilderness than most people do in their entire lives. I know how the forest sounds. I know the difference between a deer stepping through brush… and something heavier moving with intent. I know what raccoons sound like on a tent. I know what rain sounds like… on different materials… at different intensities. I know these woods. And what I heard that night… wasn’t something I recognized. The trip was simple. A solo overnight hike. Something I had done hundreds of times before. I drove out on a Friday afternoon, parked along a forest service road, and hiked about a mile into the woods to a spot I’d used before. It was perfect. A flat clearing above a small creek, surrounded by tall hemlock trees. Quiet. Isolated. The kind of place where the only sound at night is water moving over stone. I set up my tent, hung my food, cooked dinner, and sat by the creek watching the light fade through the trees. Everything felt normal. Comfortable. Routine.
