The existence of significant pre-Columbian civilization in exactly the region Fawcett had pointed toward was no longer theoretical. The civilization he had believed in was real in its broad outline. But Fawcett himself — his body, his final journals, the last record of what he saw and where he went and what, if anything, he found — has never been recovered. He walked into the Amazon on May 29th, 1925. He did not walk out. The jungle accepted him and gave nothing back. He was 57 years old. In each of these cases, there was a moment where everything seemed ordinary. A drive along a familiar road. A fishing boat on a calm sea. A hotel checkout in the early morning. A motorcycle ride into the countryside. And then, without warning, everything changed. Some left traces — a torn purse strap, a damaged hard drive, a car parked at a bridge, shoes left on a seat. Some left nothing at all. The searches came. The investigators came. The years passed.Decades later, the questions remain.
