The lead was pursued briefly and then dropped. Her disappearance drew additional attention because it occurred during the same period when investigators were still actively working the Black Dahlia case — the 1947 murder of Elizabeth Short, which had gripped Los Angeles and remained unsolved. Investigators looked for connections between the two cases. They found nothing that held up. No body was ever found. No suspect was ever named. No arrest was ever made. The torn purse, the unfinished note, and the name Kirk remain the only physical evidence of what happened to Jean Spangler on the night she walked out of her home and into Griffith Park. She has never been found. Ray Gricar, Ray Gricar had spent more than twenty years as the District Attorney of Centre County, Pennsylvania. He was a known and respected figure in the region's legal community. He was methodical, experienced, and by the accounts of those who worked with him, deeply principled. He had handled complex cases throughout his career. He was not, by any description, a man who behaved erratically. On the morning of April 15th, 2005, Gricar called his girlfriend and told her he was going for a drive. He said he was going to enjoy the spring weather in the Susquehanna River valley. He was relaxed. There was nothing in his tone or manner that suggested anything was wrong. His car was found later that day in a parking lot near the river in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The car was locked. Inside were his personal items. He was not inside. In the days and weeks that followed, searchers combed the area. His laptop computer was eventually found in the river, submerged not far from where his car had been parked. The hard drive had been removed from the laptop. The hard drive was discovered separately, further downstream, at a later date. It had been manually and deliberately damaged. Whatever had been stored on it could not be reconstructed.
