He took on smaller roles, worked in independent productions, and spent time involved in political and social activism. Those who knew him during this period also spoke about a man who was battling serious depression. He had struggled with it for years. He had, at various points, pulled away from people close to him. The withdrawals had become a pattern. In early February 2010, Andrew traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia for the Winter Olympics. He had friends in the city and had attended Olympic events. Those who interacted with him briefly described him as quiet. He was seen at a few public events. And then he was not seen at all. On February 14th, 2010, friends reported him missing to Vancouver police. His father, Walter Koenig, flew to Vancouver immediately. He did not wait.
